Kevin

Alf brought in a baby bird
folded gently in his mouth
and I thought we would name him Kevin
once he spread his wings

Father had the paper up
and grunted at me to throw it out
and I thought – golly, that’s no way
to treat our latest family

Sophie screamed and stamped her feet
and shook poor Alfie by the scruff
and I thought Kevin might wake up
until he kept on sleeping

Mother said birds don’t have souls
and tossed him into heaven
and I thought Kevin looked so calm
laying among the watercress

and I thought Kevin looked so calm
laying among the watercress
and I thought once he’d pecked his fill
he’d teach us all to fly
